The most significant ports in Tunisia are: La Goulette, Bizerte, Sousse, Sfax, Gabes and Zarzis.
La Goulette: located at around 36°49′5″N, 10°18′18″ECoordinates: 36°49′5″N, 10°18′18″E.
La Goulette (Halq al Wadi) is the old port of Tunis. Goletta was of considerable importance for the protection of the city. In 1525 internal dissension gave Barbarossa Khaireddine an excuse to seize the city of Tunis in the name of the Ottoman Sultan; in 1535 Goletta was attacked by Charles V of Spain who seized Barbarossa’s fleet, the arsenal and 300 cannon. The Spanish controlled Tunis and several other points on the coast for about 35 years, until the Ottoman Turks regained control of the country. Goletta’s importance both as port and fortress declined throughout the 19th century, especially from 1893, when a ship canal through the shallow lagoon was opened directly to the city. Today, La Goulette is the main Cruise Gate to Tunisia.
Sousse: Sousse (Arabic سوسة Susa), is a city of Tunisia, located 140 km south of Tunis, at only 20 km from the international airport of Monastir.
A bustling port open to the town centre and giving a touch of gaiety to its activity.
A medina charged with history, draped in its fortifications and which continues to live at its own rhythm, harmoniously contrasting with the modern city of typically Mediterranean charm.
A seaside resort stretching to the north, making up together with the integrated complex of Port El Kantaoui one of the most complete and most diversified tourist zones of the Mediterranean, promoting all possible pleasures relating to evasion and recreation and making it to an all-season resort.
The Gulf of Gabès at 34° N 10.4166667° E.
The gulf is 100 kilometers long and wide, with the Kerkena Islands on the northeast and Djerba Island on the southeast. It has a large tidal range, 2.5 meters at spring tides.
Southern Tunisian port city in Gabes becomes major Mediterranean cruise ship destination:
For many of the visitors coming from Germany, Italy, Great Britain, France, the USA, Australia and Japan, the stop over in one of Tunisia’s greatest southern cities is an opportunity to get a strong flavour of the country’s magical south.
Cruise Terminals: Berth 4 and 5 suitable for cruise vessels.
Zarzis (Arabic: جرجيس) is a coastal town in southeastern Tunisia, it has a major port where a park of economic activities is based. In fact this very port is of major importance and played a very crucial role throughout the history of Zarzis, to the Phoenician, Romans and Arabs the port was of strategic importance.
